Once upon a time, Norman was a happy family man
He would perform magic shows at home for his young daughter, with the help of her wife as his assistant
His wife though starts getting ill, and one day she faints during one of their magic shows, dropping a torch light that was used as a prop
Sadly, not long after, she passes away from illness
Every day since then, Norman performs magic tricks to her daughter to bring her joy through their mourning
As she grows though, she picks up different interests that help her move on
And as a consequence, she becomes less interested in magic…
Until one day she is all grown up and leaves home for university
Norman is left all alone in that house now, having dinners for one
He keeps working as assistant in a theatre, until one day he is asked to step in for a magician that couldn’t make it to his show that evening. Norman sees that as his big break to become a magician and of course he accepts.
Because of that Norman decides to become Edgar the Extraordinnaire, and bring joy to people through magic
He fills theatres with people in awe of his talent
His confidence grows, and magic becomes his whole identity and self-worth
Because of that, one day he stumbles across a magic trapdoor during one of his performances, which transports him to an alternative world
In this new world, magic is the norm and he witnesses incredible magic being used in day-to-day situations, making his magic tricks no special at all
He promptly tries to fit in using his fake tricks repertoire in the hope that no one finds out about his lack of magic capabilities, but no one seems to be impressed
Because of that, he eventually gets caught and is disgraced as an outsider
Norman realises the hard way that he has lost what gave him purpose and made him special
He feels depressed and lonelier than ever
Until a kid that was playing nearby notices this man feeling sad, so she gets closer and does some magic to try and make him smile. Talking to her Norman finds out that that kid, out of all people, turns out to be his granddaughter.
This simple gesture makes him realise that he doesn’t need magic anymore in order to be special
He finally learns a valuable lesson about letting go so he can move on with his life
And ever since then, Norman is now the one holding the torch for his granddaughter while she brings him joy through her magic
He starts to enjoy his stay in this magical new world, retires from his magician career and moves in with his daughter’s family-
