Hello everyone!
Here's my final submission for the course. Thank you for all your insights during the program.
Can't wait to see what you think of the final piece.
Cheers!
Story Spine:
1. Once upon a time there was a smart but scared dragon that after 3 unnecessary years in fly school never really learned how to fly.
2. Every day she would go to school and study, but she would only fly a few inches off the ground.
3. Until one day a new teacher arrives and decides that this year is her last year to graduate fly school. Her last chance!
4. Because of that she builds a machine to help her finally fly, but it busts on the ground the night be fore her big exam.
5. Because of that, out of desperation, she decides to dress a friend as herself to take her place at the exam.
6. Because of that, they get caught and she is expelled from fly school.
7. Until finally she goes to talk to her ex-teacher, understands her insecurities and let go of them. And decides to give another shot on learning how to fly.
8. And ever since that day she flies through the skies as the mighty dragon she is.
MINOR BEATS:
Act 01:
Maeve wakes up, after one ring of the alarm besides her bed
She brushes her teeth as she listen to the news of a new moon finding
She looks at the “Mighty Dragon” poster on the wall: “One day”
She helps her mother in the kitchen with the proportions with a new recipe she is trying to make
She kisses her mother goodbye and she leaves the house as her mother is pointlessly checking if she didn’t forget to grab the science project.
Her friends meet her on the way to school, land by her side and start walking with her.
Maeve answers questions about the aerodynamics of flying
Someone makes a mean comment about the fact that she knows all the theory but doesn’t know how to actually do it.
Maeve tries to fly but ends up falling again and her classmates laugh
She runs away crying and bumps into a big tall figure.
The new teacher acknowledges Maeve’s inability to fly and states that this is her last year to learn how to fly, there will be no next year for her.
Act 02:
Maeve plans to build a machine to help her fly, she does all the calculations necessary and comes up with the final version of the machine.
Building the machine takes days and night;
But finally the machine is finished. Maeve goes for a test and it needs a couple adjustments, but she’s flying!
In the next day, on the night before her exam, Maeve makes the necessary adjustments.
She goes for another test and it’s perfect!
Suddenly a strong air breeze gets to her, Maeve gets disoriented
And she falls on the ground and unfortunately, the machine crashes.
The day of the exam arrives and with no time left for any new big idea, and still not knowing how to fly, Maeve convinces one of her friends, Jess to take her place in the exam. She dresses Jess like herself and get her ready for the exam. But they didn’t knew someone was watching.
The time of the flying exam comes. Maeve’s name is called. Jess steps up, dressed as Maeve.
While Jess is flying one of Maeve’s classmates tells the teacher about what he saw earlier. That the dragon flying is not Maeve, but her friend that already graduated years ago, dressed to look like Maeve.
When Jess lands the teacher removes the wig from Jess’s head, exposing that she’s not Maeve.
Maeve runs to help Jess out and explain herself but she is sent to the principal's office.
Maeve tries to explain why she did what she did, but Principal Lightfeather has only one opinion about what happened: unacceptable!
The teacher and Principal Lightfeather cross eyes, as they are agreeing with each other.
The principal tells Maeve she is expelled. She accept her fate and crying leaves the room.
Principal confronts the teacher asking if that was really necessary and the Teacher nods her head confirming that it is going to work.
Act 03:
Maeve runs home and rips the Mighty Dragon poster off the wall.
She cries all out. Her mother comes and hug her.
She gets out of the house to get some air and lays down to watch the moon
She falls asleep and dreams with her flying with the Mighty Dragon
She decides she is going to learn how to fly by herself
After school hours, she goes to the school’s field to practice
She puts book on the ground and as looking at them makes her first attempt to fly. And the second; And fifth; And tenth;
She doesn’t know but the teacher is secretly watching everything.
Disappointed, Maeve decides to call off the day and go home;
On the next day Maeve is back at the field trying to fly;
This time the teacher comes closer to Maeve and correct one of Maeve movements;
Maeve thanks her but says that it doesn’t matter how many things she corrects, she doesn't think she’s ever going to fly.
The teacher explains that what is holding Maeve down is not what she doesn’t know, but what she cannot see. She doesn’t realize that she’s afraid. Afraid that people will laugh at her. Afraid that she won’t be perfect at this one thing. The teacher keep going and acknowledges that Maeve is a fan of the “Mighty dragon” tale, and she shares with her that while everyone thought the story was about reaching for the stars and being the best every time, she always thought that the story was about how far you can go if you believe in yourself and never give up. The teacher keeps going and tells Maeve that of course she won’t be good at the beginning, she has to accept that. And keep working on it, without the fear of being judged.
The teacher does a few exercises with Maeve and then leaves her alone.
Maeve keeps practicing those exercises everyday after school hours, when she’s alone. She keeps getting better and better. Flying higher and higher.
Then, one day she goes to practice and find the field loaded with people that are there to watch the school’s game.
She meets her friends and they sit together to watch.
Someone makes a mean comment that she’s there to watch what she cannot do.
Jess tries to explain that Maeve’s been practising.
But her ex-colleagues just don’t want to believe that.
Maeve just tells Jess to let them talk about what they don’t know, that it doesn’t matter what they think of her, she’s the only one that truly knows what she can or cannot do.
After everyone is out Maeve goes to the highest point of the field.
She closes her eyes. She feels the breeze and takes a deep breath.
She imagines her flying through the sky, diving into the clouds. She opens her eyes and takes a step off the building.
Falling without anything to catch her on the ground, She takes a deep breath and when she is about to meet the concrete she swords up the air and goes straight up to the sky.
