Dumphrey, a young lonely kid who loves wizards and dragons moves to a new town with his best friend, his dog Coco. On the train a bunch of kids are having fun talking, this only makes Dumphrey more aware of his lack of friends.
His parents meet him at the train station noticing Dumphrey’s unease.
At his new school Dumphrey sees this as an opportunity to reinvent himself. He tries to change his look and name but the school bully sees his name and his shy demeanor as an easy target.
Dumphrey runs home upset at his chance to be the cool kid is ruined, but it’s bring your pet to school day tomorrow, he has to think of a way to change his circumstances.
Coco tries to console Dumphrey but Dumphrey dismisses him.
Dumphrey wishes on a magical star for the coolest thing of all to bring to school tomorrow- a dragon.
The next morning he is surprised with a confident and blunt dragon. Dumphrey despite loving dragons doesn’t want to go on adventure with him but show off at school, he is more concerned about what he will wear.
The dragon shocks his Dad in the front yard.
Coco is sad that he didn’t get to go to school with Dumphrey.
Dumphrey rides the dragon to school and lands magnificently, the kids shocked and in awe of the dragon.
During show and tell, the school bully curious how Dumphrey has a dragon, the dragon nearly gives it away by claiming magic. Instead this backfires and outs Dumphrey as a magic and wizard loving kid.
At school recess, everyone overwhelms the dragon taking pictures and shouting at him, he asks to leave but Dumphrey says no, he has embarrassed him already he needs to be quiet and cool.
The school bully puts a top hat on the dragon and calls him stupid, the dragon does not stand for this and burns the top hat causing the school to set on fire!
The Dragon tries to apologize but instead Dumphrey shouts at him and calls him a mistake. Disappointed and hurt dragon tells Dumphrey the kids don’t even like him and he didn’t care to get to know him, that he himself is just like the bullies.
The dragon flies away and Dumphrey is left to walk home.
On his walk home he looks at the picture of coco in his pocket. He thinks about all their amazing times together and feels guilty for not bringing his best friend.
Coco runs to Dumphrey and Dumphrey apologizes, coco of course unconditionally loves Dumphrey despite feeling sad.
Dumphrey then apologizes to his parents and the Dragon outside the window.
The next day at school, he’s dressed in his wizard garb, he’s decided he should just be himself even if no one likes him. A girl approaches him, he thinks she’ll talk about the dragon but instead she compliments him on his cape, she has a dog herself that she has named Harry Potter.
