What is it that allows this? What is it that holds all together, that force that binds all matter together, that binds things to each other? Perhaps it is gravity, those invisible hands that bind all things together. Perhaps it is a kind of love. Perhaps gravity is a kind of love, those invisible hands moving to touch and pull together and hold tight. Gravity and love are how all this came to be. Gravity and love are how this tale begins.
Once upon a time there was a universe. And in that universe there was a galaxy. And in that galaxy, there was a solar system full of celestial bodies. Foremost among these was the sun, the lord of the solar system. The sun was the bringer of light. The master of the day. All things in the system revolved around him.
For years, untold, he brought warmth and light to this system, especially to those upon the planet Earth. He was a source of life and energy. Many people in many places and many times worshiped the sun as a god for those on the earth. There was another celestial being of equal importance in the skies. She had loomed just as large as the sun. She was the queen of the night. She was a pullerr of the tides. She protected the earth, drawing away the asteroids that would strike at it, sometimes allowing them to strike her instead, unlike the sun, which was always constant one in the sky. The moon shifted and changed each time it appeared in the night. She waxed and waned in her fullness. And sometimes she did not seem to be there at all. His body flared with fire. Her body was covered with scars for eons into eternity. The sun and moon carried out their duties. The peoples of Earth saw them as beings of immense power, but to themselves. The sun and moon were creatures of duty.
They lived lives of never ending sameness. They were chained by gravity. The sun and moon yearned to leave behind their responsibilities. The sun resented having to be at the center of the solar system. The sun did not like the attention are being constantly needed to hold things together. The moon resented the earth for constantly needing our protection. The sun and the moon did not want to be worshiped.
They wanted to be free. For eons more, the sun and moon continued shackled by gravity, doing their duties until one day an eclipse for the sun and moon together. The gravity that attracted the sun and moon for so long gave them a gift each other's company. For the peoples of the earth. It was a dark day. The day the sun was blocked.
They cowered in terror and prayed for the light’s return. For the moon and for the sun. It was the greatest day of their lives. They had only seen each other from afar. But now, up close, they discovered that they had a kinship of familiarity. The moon did not fear the sun's flares and spots. The sun did not turn away from the moon's scars.
The sun and the moon continue to get to know each other. For the people of the earth, their terror continued. For the sun and the moon. It is a time of joy. They understand and are understood. They dance. But there is fear. They feel the worry that they will have to break apart. Gravity which brought them together will pull them apart again. How long will it be until they see each other again? The moon and the sun take hands and make a decision. They will free themselves of gravity's pull. They will make their own destinies and explore the wide expanse of space together.
The sun and the moon pull away. They feel the many hands of gravity upon them. They feel the many hands of gravity from the many planets pull at them. The moon feels the Earth pull upon her. The sun feels all the planets pull upon him. The sun and the moon feel their own pulls. Their pulls upon each other. Their pulls upon their responsibilities. Their pulls upon their homes. The sun and moon let go. They release their holds. They begin to pull away. As they pull, the hold of gravity upon them gets weaker. The pull o the planets gets weaker. The pull of the Earth gets weaker. The sun and moon pull further and further and the pulls gets weaker and weaker, until it is barely a tug in the back of their minds.
They leave the earth and the solar system behind. For the many peoples of the earth, this is a calamity. Absolute chaos reigns. They see the sun and the moon drift away. The planet becomes cold. The tides stop. There is no one to turn and see the asteroids which strike the earth, creating more destruction. All the planets spin into disorder and chaos. An enormous asteroid threatens to strike the earth. It could destroy all life.
The sun and moon continue their dance through the cosmos. They enjoy themselves. The planets have rallied around Jupiter, the largest of them. Jupiter provides limited stability but cannot give the warmth that the sun provided. The people of Earth can see the destruction coming. Life hangs on by a thread. They cry out into the void, begging for help. The earth and all of the planets cry with them. The sun hears this cry. The moon hears this cry. They return to the chaos and destruction that has preceded in their absence. The moon turns away the asteroid that is about to strike the earth. The sun brings back light and warmth, thawing out the world and saving what is left of life.
The people of Earth rejoice and mourn and rejoice. The sun and moon are at an eclipse. They could not allow this to happen again. They must return to their duties until gravity brings them together again. They dance. They part.
The sun and the moon allow the many hands of gravity to take hold of them again. The sun takes hold of the planets. The moon takes hold of the Earth. The sun and the moon hold onto each other and to home.
The sun and the moon return to how they used to be. They do their duties. Their sadness. But they do not despair. They know they have each other. Their love can span the many millions of miles. Occasionally they will be brought together by gravity in an eclipse. And they will dance.
